6 Ways you haven't thought about Freelancers

MARCH 2023
OLLIE SALISBURY, PEOPLE OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Like a lot of folk, I saw the news that Publicis will be pulling back their spend on freelance talent and noted that the prevailing reason given was that the UK has very stringent laws, which can make these engagements *slightly more complex in IR35.
(*to be clear, they are not preventative, they just take some additional management)

Australia and large parts of Asia (and the rest of the world for that matter) don’t have these same kinds of contentious rules, which makes me believe that freelance talent structures will prevail here.

Market dynamics will shape the need for freelance talent, and exactly how and where that talent is deployed may well change. But if anything, it’s only accelerating.

Here are some things to think about:

1. Freelancers provide total net value (ROI) that usually far exceeds their upfront cost

2. Waiting for notice periods may not align with efforts to optimize speed, efficiency, and value

3. Freelancers may represent your target audience or consumer base, enhancing authenticity

4. Seasoned freelancers bring efficiency through their experience

5. Diverse perspectives, which freelancers often provide, can yield valuable insights

6. They probably know someone for that ‘other thing’ you’re working on
